Z4 M Coupe

•April 26, 2011 • 6 Comments

We’ve had this car on here a few times before, and for good reason— it’s gorgeous. Not in any conventional way, mind you, but when you stick the S54 screamer from the E46 M3 into this curious little shape (a Bangle creation, natch), the emotional appeal is just overwhelming.

Please keep your 1-Series M Coupe. Thanks.

Guest contributor: Nate Brown on his 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI

•April 22, 2011 • 7 Comments

I suppose the way I got into Volkswagens and why I bought one in the first place is as typical as any other. Although I wasn’t raised in a ‘car’ household in the strictest sense – my dad was into cars but we didn’t have the money for one decent car let alone something fancy – my uncle had a bunch of VW Buses, and I always liked small, compact cars. Seems odd, right? I don’t know why it was, but as much as I loved crazy sports cars, when I was out and about it was the CRX, GTI and various small Nissans and Toyotas that I liked the most.

Ibis White B7 RS4 still looks great, sounds great

•April 21, 2011 • 1 Comment

Revisiting an old flame. Yes, it’s just a promotional video for an aftermarket tuner, but we still love it. The RS4 doesn’t look bad in any color, but white would probably be our top choice (followed by Sprint Blue).

RS4 or M3? We realize it’s not 2008 anymore, but that question has, at least for us, lost none of its entertainment value (note that the C63 was never really in the running— not seriously, anyway). Every time we think we’ve settled definitively on the M3, the RS4 keeps pulling us back, like an especially persistent suitress.

One of the few times you’d actually get away with a ‘2 FST 4 U’ vanity plate

Still pretty obnoxious, though. You almost think a car as rarefied as the Audi Sport Quattro deserves better.

The stance, on the other hand, is just bananas.

More here, some tasty wallpapers (but of different cars) here. We wish we had better quality of this serious eye candy.

Perfect stance on this one, as far as we can tell. While we don’t love the whale tail (much cleaner without it), the rest of the car is looking pretty seriously on point, impact bumpers and all. Don’t think we’ve ever caught ourselves admiring Champagne Metallic (?) so much before. Well here we are— and it looks great.

Lotus Omega. Or is it Carlton?

•April 20, 2011 • 4 Comments

Thanks to platform sharing, this is a car that’s always had a bit of an identity crisis. But whether you think it’s an Omega or a Carlton, a Lotus or an Opel (or a Vauxhall), we dig ’em an awful lot.

Will we ever encounter one in the metal? We’re not holding our breath. They sure look good in pictures, though.

More here.

M88 buddies

•April 19, 2011 • 4 Comments

Well, sort of.

The BMW M88/3 is an in line 6 cylinder (I6) piston engine. It was based on the M88/1 that was used in the BMW M1’s street version, with double overhead cam and four valves per cylinder. The M88/3 was used in the early BMW M635CSi and BMW M5 (E28) and produced 286 PS (210 kW/282 hp) (source).

Nice sense of scale to this shot, too. Note that the E28 is by no means a big car! What’s interesting is that despite looking every bit the tall, boxy saloon that it is (compared to the M1, anyway), the M5 doesn’t give an inch as far as sexiness goes— in our opinion, anyway. That shark nose with those quad headlights is just a deeply stirring look— we don’t think it’ll ever fail to impress.

Apologies that it’s been so quiet on this front. Been having tremendous fun driving her, but the media output (photos, video, sound) has largely not been up to snuff (though there has also been some gear misbehavior) and thus, not worth publishing. Here’s one from a recent drive— more of this (and better quality) soon, hopefully.

Cue “Dueling Banjos.”
