That UrS6 Avant from last week’s grab bag succeeded in capturing our imagination

•March 13, 2012 • 4 Comments

So, here’s some more of it. We’ve always had a soft spot for the UrS4 and UrS6, and this one’s no exception.

We understand the car belongs to the founder of Audizine. Well played, sir— that is an exceptionally good-looking Audi.

The Audi UrS4 and the Audi UrS6 were the original names given to what would become the Audi S4 and Audi S6, respectively. The UrS4 was made between the years of 1992 and 1997. The UrS6 was made between the years of 1995 and 1997. Both of the automobiles came with 227 horsepower 2.2 liter five cylinder configurations complete with intercoolers and turbocharging. On the European continent, there were V8 powered versions of both models available.

The “Ur” prefix is derived from the German language to designate an “original” make. The prefix was adopted by car lovers around the world in reference to the original Audi Quattro, which was produced between the years of 1980 and 1991. The term is now also employed to designate the original S4 and S6 cars as a means of differentiating them from later models that used the same name.

Since the early ‘90s, Audi has utilized the S letter to signify its high performance production vehicles. The S4 was a higher performing version of the Audi 100 saloon vehicle, which was initially known as the Audi 100 S4. It was luxuriously designed and featured a lot of equipment as part of its design that was merely optional on most Audi vehicles (source).

Guest contributor: Óscar Martínez on driving the Ferrari F355 Spider (part 1 of 2)

•March 9, 2012 • 11 Comments

Óscar Martínez and Juan Muñoz of 8000vueltas.com got one of those ‘pinch-me-am-I-dreaming’ opportunities of which most of us can only, well, dream: test drive a Porsche and a Ferrari back-to-back, then declare the winner of this personal contest. Here, Óscar recounts his time with the Ferrari, an F355 Spider.

At the end of the 1990s, the war of electronic nanny systems and intrusive driver’s aides began. But before that, Ferrari produced the ultimate evolution of its range of V8s from a time when they were still mounted in a steel monocoque: the F355. At the same time, Porsche, too, extracted the last ounce of performance from its final aircooled 911, the 993. It was a fascinating milestone in a very intense war before both manufacturers shifted to what might best be described as a ‘techno-war’.

We had to laugh a little

•March 8, 2012 • 10 Comments

On the face of it, this print ad seems what might politely be described as “optimistic” on the part of Citroën. On the other hand, we freely admit that we know little about what power the formidable deux chevaux might have in attracting members of the fairer sex. So tell us, European readers of a certain age, how realistic is the scene that you see here?

Imagine that

A Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 (one of 200 cars ever produced; ergo, what you might call pretty damn rare) actually being put to good use? We love seeing it mixing it up in the real world as if it were a petit monospace or some other form of generic people mover. Mud? Snow? The T16 takes whatever you can throw at it. And we’re sure this particular T16 got thrown a lot of snow this season after the epic winter Europe has had.

Almost as good as being there. Okay not really, but we still found plenty to like about this video, the occasionally awkward banter notwithstanding.

Lots of good stuff here. Well done, Motor Trend— credit given where credit is due, in spite of past or even more recent transgressions.

As an aside, guest contributor Kevin must get a lot of personal satisfaction when seeing clips like this one 🙂

Guest contributor: Tom Fuller on his 1995 Acura NSX

•March 2, 2012 • 9 Comments

This blog has always been a fan of the Acura NSX (Honda NSX elsewhere in the world), and we know that many of our readers are fans as well. We invited owner Tom Fuller to talk about what makes the NSX so great.

MCB: Why the NSX?

TF: To me, the NSX offers supercar looks, performance, and technology, but at commuter car prices. Along with the S2000, it is easily one of the most affordable pure driver’s cars sold in the last 20 years. The driver is just so connected to what the car is doing. Combine that with rock solid Honda reliability and you have a recipe for a great car.

And why not? After all, in the words of the ad, signor Gandini is simply enjoying his work.

And if you’re feeling particularly impatient, just fast forward to the 5:59 mark for much Saab 99 Turbo awesomeness. Love – and we mean absolutely love – this car.

Video will get taken down any day now, so enjoy it while it lasts.
