An unexpectedly absorbing article. Among the things we learned:

  • That engineer, Zora Arkus-Duntov, won at Le Mans in 1954 and 1955 in a Porsche 550, reminding us of another towering American figure in both motorsport and sports car development who also won at Le Mans.
  • Arkus-Duntov also set a record at Pikes Peak. In a Chevy Bel Air.
  • Arkus-Duntov had wanted a mid-engine Corvette but was ultimately thwarted by GM’s then-head of design, who preferred the existing long-hood, short-deck look.

In summary, we could totally see Arkus-Duntov ruffling feathers at bureaucratic, top-down 1950s and ’60s GM. Were it not for his brilliance, he probably would have been shown the door, his name subsequently relegated to a footnote in the annals of automotive history.

This thing is rear-wheel drive?!

Driving a Subaru BRZ in the motherland (母国)

Nice work if you can get it, no? Some of these marvelous roads remind us of a sort of cherry blossomed Japanese Col de Turini, although seeing the car being driven on the left side of the road does take a little getting used to.

Ford Sierra RS Cosworth— saloon?

Somehow, we managed to overlook the fact that these were also offered as four-doors. We knew about the Sierra Sapphire, to be sure, but as far as the RS Cosworth goes, you only ever see the, er, hatchback with the almost comically large rear wing. But lo and behold, there was indeed an RS Cosworth sedan. There was even an AWD (“4×4“) version!

These do strike us as understated and handsome in their own right, arguably moreso if anything— a sort of everyman’s Lotus Carlton. And a good thousand or so pounds lighter than the Carlton, to boot. Wonder if we’ll ever see on one these shores.

Probably not— unless we ever come across the example below that was brought into Canadia.

Kind of a silly but harmless video, which some of you may have already seen. Dovetails fittingly with the scorching heat we’ve been experiencing here lately.

The solution that the protagonist comes up with in the end is unacceptable, by the way 🙂

E30: gone but not forgotten

The E30 – our beloved E30 – is SOLD due to a confluence of circumstances. She will be sorely missed, but we hope we can replace it with something just as cool in the near-future.

We don’t think it’s going to be our last time owning an E30.
