Cinematic cars: 1967 Sunbeam Alpine from "Get Carter" (1971)

•March 21, 2010 • 2 Comments

British gangster Jack Carter (Michael Caine) is being chased through Newcastle by two villains. The provocative Glenda (Geraldine Moffat) swoops in to pick him up in a white Sunbeam Alpine roadster. The camera lingers lovingly as the leather-gloved Glenda works the Alpine’s gear lever with long, sinewy throws. Pretty damn sexy.

Nice funky score from composer Roy Budd– worth listening to loud:

Haven’t done one of these in awhile. Have a nice weekend.

Exige, part deux

This may be bordering on overload (actually, for us? nah), but while plumbing the murky depths of the Internets in preparation of last week’s Exige/Elise post, we happened across the stunning work of Lotustalk member ‘skiddo’. We thought these moody, minor key gems were richly deserving of their own post. So here they are, without further ado.

But when you’ve got a pristine, gleaming white 356 as nice as this one, words aren’t necessary, really.

The factory interior of the E30 M3 Evo II— one of our absolute favorites.

Hot damn

Old but new-to-us clips from the erstwhile Drivers Republic. Color us certifiably jealous.

It almost hit 70 F where we are today, so the days of driving on the white stuff are probably behind us (at least until next year).

Alfa Romeo 147 GTA: "if you want to be sensible, go on a bus"

•March 17, 2010 • Comments Off on Alfa Romeo 147 GTA: "if you want to be sensible, go on a bus"

The 147 Gran Turismo Alleggerita seems perfect in all but one very critical way: its 250 bhp go straight to the front wheels. Still, in a textbook example of irrationally loving a car, it’s the one the Top Gear trio would unanimously have.

It’s true though. Take a look at the engine bay and the interior: they’re absolutely incredible. Listen to the sound of that 3.2L Italian V6: stirring. It may have a hatch door in the back, but inside and out, the 147 GTA doesn’t betray its legendary nameplate.

Quoth Jezza: “Bad cars can be brilliant, and there’s your example.”

Additional reading:

  • Perhaps Clarkson would prefer the Autodelta version of the 147 GTA fitted with a limited-slip diff (oh, he did?). The understeer is still overpowering though (and sounds awful to boot).
  • Jack Baruth makes a cogent case for FWD (he would probably argue that JC’s on-track theatrics are probably as a result of poor driver inputs)

Our idea of an ideal sports car

You’re looking at it right here. Really nice example of an R Gruppe Porsche 911S, as featured in the May ’08 issue of European Car.

In addition, here’s a nice bit of history we picked up:

The R Gruppe influence led him to go for the more period look of running mismatched wheels. In the ’70s, finding Fuchs in broader widths wasn’t an option, so enthusiasts looking for wider meats would run Minilites in the rear. The rear wheels on Crawford’s car were built by PS Engineering and fit the period look of the car perfectly. The 8×15 wheels allow him to run 225/50s in back, while the front 7×15 Fuchs are wrapped in 205/55s.
