Got $39K burning a hole in your pocket?

Then perhaps you might be interested in this stunning example of the very fast, very exclusive W124 500E (one of several dream cars from our youth, and perhaps the ultimate Q-ship of that era) that turned up recently on BaT:

The wheels are an inch too big (BaT got it right, as usual) and we’re no fans of tinted windows, but this is still some pretty serious car. But is it $39,000 worth of car— especially in modified form? That’s a good question, and a pretty interesting discussion has materialized in the comments.

Still— wow. This is probably the nicest example we’ve seen in recent memory, possibly ever.

You and your M Coupe. Quiet, solitary moment on the Nurburgring, amidst a backdrop of fading afternoon light. Perfect.

Behind the scenes at Le Mans

•June 25, 2010 • 1 Comment

Arguably as much as the races themselves, we’re interested in what goes on behind the scenes at motoring events. In the paddock. In the pits. In the fields. And our friend Yan Alexander of the Blenheim Gang has captured the ambiance of Le Mans in his own inimitable style.

BB friend – by way of A Time To Get – Robbie shows how it’s done at the Motherlode 400, yet another one of those awesome California-based vintage car rallies we keep hearing about. This is how you treat a classic sports car!

Good grief

This is why we love Volkswagen’s narrow-angle VR6 engine— and in the MkIV Golf R32, in particular (given that it doesn’t quite sound the same in, say, a Eurovan).

(Nevermind the tinted tails— not our thing.)

Is the R32 the fastest or flashiest car? No— but that’s not the point. It packs such an outsized growl for such an unassuming package, and therein (at least for us) lies part of its appeal. And of course, forced induction (should one choose to open one’s wallet) opens the door to all sorts of eye-popping performance gains. We’d love to have one.

Just when you think you've seen it all..

..a Seven on E36 M3 M Double Spoke wheels and matching M striping turns up on your radar. The weird thing is, we kinda like it. Heretical?

However, one thing is for sure: the car needs better rubber. Big wheels may be forgivable (depending on the car and the wheels), but sub-par tires are not. Anything short of a Yoko A048, Toyo R888 or other DOT R compound is probably doing this car injustice— unless it’s strictly a street-driven vehicle. But then what would be the point of owning a Seven?
