That interior, oh my

•November 28, 2012 • 3 Comments

We were treated to a peek inside a garage belonging to a deep-pocketed collector recently, and amidst all the precious glass and metal were these tasty specimens:

Even in the presence of some seriously envy-inducing machinery, we were drawn to these minty – yet oddly out of place – cloth seats (likely from a 944 Turbo S; they also came in gray) like moths to a flame. As this photo somewhat suggests, the collector doesn’t exactly strike us as an ’80s-car type (unless perhaps it’s a car that’s valued in the six figures), so we wonder what these seats might be going into or what they’ll eventually be used for. Office furniture, perhaps?

Bugatti’s head of design isn’t too good for a backdated, stripped-down 911 SC

For anyone who was ever on the fence about the SC (considered by some to be the ‘entry-level’ aircooled 911), that should be all the validation that one should ever need.

So long, old friend

After many years of faithful service, the GTI is sold. That was a great car, but the time had long since come to move on (as long-time readers of this blog might have surmised). God willing, perhaps there will be another one in our future— albeit next time a MkI or MkII.

Thanks for these and so many other memories!

Sicily, that is. Boxster optional.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our US readers.

What the?!

This is beyond weird. You are looking at a Lamborghini Flying Star II by the coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring— basically a one-off Lamborghini 400GT shooting brake.

It does look *very* sharp in profile, doesn’t it? (Not so sure about the front.)

Early morning quiet, the West Side Highway

•November 20, 2012 • 17 Comments

One of the rare quiet moments (early on a weekend, natch).

The car should sit a little nicer (especially up front) with a mild sport spring-and-shock combo, but quite frankly, we’re loving the compliant ride (not to mention ample ground clearance) of the stock suspension so much that we’re a little hesitant to mess with it. Are we getting soft in our old age?

Doing it the old-fashioned way

•November 16, 2012 • 1 Comment

Before the Internet, this is what people had to do to find one another:

FIFTY-ONE years ago, Ernie Spitzer, a San Francisco printer and the owner of a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, had an idea. He went to the Department of Motor Vehicles, and for 39 cents each obtained the names and addresses of all 35 registered Gullwing owners in California.

By letter, he invited each of them to show up at Ricky’s Motel in Palo Alto on a Saturday morning in August 1961. Eighteen owners did, and that was the beginning of the Gull Wing Group.

Great article— we recommend checking out the rest of it here.

And since we’re on the topic, we also recommend checking out Depth of Speed’s Gullwing video/owner feature (although you may have already seen it):

Inspiring stuff.
