This is what a youngtimer rally looks like in Europe

Very cool! Looks like a great time. Above all, we like the variety of the cars represented— looks very egalitarian. We like that.

Well, short of a tōge, anyway.

Cars = art?

Of course!

From the North Carolina Museum of Art:

October 12, 2013–January 20, 2014

Porsche by Design: Seducing Speed marks the North Carolina Museum of Art’s first design exhibition, exploring the history and development of the Porsche lineage from the 1930s to the present day.

Featuring more than 20 automobiles, Porsche by Design presents cars owned by Ralph Lauren, Steve McQueen, and Janis Joplin, as well as the one-of-a-kind Panamericana concept car on loan from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

Car lovers will appreciate the rarity and engineering genius of the automobiles on view. Art lovers will be intrigued by Porsche design and the connections that can be drawn with other works of art. All will gain a deep appreciation for hallmarks of the Porsche marque: beauty, artistry, technology, and innovation.

Volkswagen Type 2 (colloquially, “VW Bus”) going through the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, this thing comes along and shows that no, you haven’t.

Hat tip to Stipistop.

2013 Fuelbrothers meet in Nürburg, Germany

•September 26, 2013 • 5 Comments

Reader and kindred spirit Claudio sent in these images from a local club meet held recently in Nürburg, Germany— we all know what it’s famous for. Thanks, Claudio!

Fuelbrothers is a group of six friends who are interested in cars, which started as an email exchange and mutated into a blog in 2009. We are a bit different from the conventional petrolhead in the sense that we don’t really care about top speeds, horsepower, or Nürburgring lap times; we are more interested in sharing our thoughts, philosophizing about fast or unusual cars and their design, and attending car-related events. Another strange thing is that although we live in Germany, apart from admiring certain BMWs we don’t really gravitate toward German cars or current models. We like complex or quirky engineering and are into turbos, superchargers, and intercoolers; some of us lust after Citroën SMs and Alfa Romeo Montreals. In general we like anything coming out of Britain, Sweden, or Italy.

At the moment amongst us we are privileged to have the following vehicles in our Fuelbrothers “fleet”:

1978 Alfa Romeo Spider
1974 Alfa Romeo GTV
Aston Martin DB7
Audi TT RS
Audi RS6
BMW E39
Lotus Elise S1
Lotus Esprit Turbo S4
Nissan 300 ZX
Saab 900 Turbo
Volvo T5 Station Wagon
VW T2

Since we are located all across Germany we try to meet at least once a year; this year we drove to the Nürburgring – 50km from my place – to watch those crazy people risk their cars and necks in the public Touristenfahrten, which has a reputation for being a bit of a free-for-all…

Gotta say, we’re liking the 4C more and more..

..warts and all. We just have to say we’re glad we’re not in the market for a new mid-engine sports car, because that would provoke some serious internal warring as to which manufacturer most deserves our hard-earned car-buying dollars. This new Alfa would have to be right up there.

New old stock

Those words should be sweet music to the ears of people who either collect or find themselves in search of difficult-to-source parts that are no longer in production. We match neither description (well, not usually), but even we couldn’t resist snapping up this cool set of unused S.E.V. Marchal auxiliary driving lamps when they turned up recently for a song.

And now the big question is, what car should these go on?

What is the coolest car? Your suggestions

•September 18, 2013 • 4 Comments

Here were some of your suggestions to the impossible question we posed last week.

In no particular order…

BMW E28 M5:

Lancia Flavia Berlina:

Porsche 356 Speedster:

Morgan Threewheeler:

Ferrari NART Spyder:

Any Paul Newman engine-swapped Volvo station wagon (like this one with a Buick Grand National V6):

NSU TTS:

Audi (B5) RS4:

Jaguar XJC:

Ferrari 250 GT Lusso:

Nice stuff, guys! Certainly not a bad choice in the bunch. Thanks for playing— we hope you enjoyed that as much as we did.
