The cinematic cars of "Manhattan" (1979)

•January 10, 2010 • Comments Off on The cinematic cars of "Manhattan" (1979)

You don’t think of Woody Allen’s “Manhattan” as being a ‘car’ movie (although this segment was never intended to be about “car movies” in the usual sense– the less ink spilled about Tokyo Drift, the better), but there are a couple of scenes of Allen and pals driving down either side of Manhattan (v-e-e-ry slowly– truly impossible to fathom today!) that are just flat out gorgeous. Shot in pearly black and white, this might be one of the most beautifully filmed movies ever– perfectly paired to the music of Gershwin. A real slice of late-’70s Americana, NYC-style.

Watching this film, it’s impossible not to love New York.

Click the stills for links to individual scenes.

The Allen character trying to talk his friend out of buying a 356 (“I hate cars”)..

..unsuccessfully.

This is only tangentially related, but Subway by Bruce Davidson (a body of work from around the same time– maybe slightly later) makes a great yin to Allen’s yang and is another reason to love New York, although you’ll see the two artists go about it their own separate ways.

Alfa Romeo: an appreciation

Some of our favorite Alfa cars/photos. Such boss cars – so timeless and ceaselessly classy – although it’s unclear to us where they slot in amongst various other models of BMW and Porsche that we love and want dearly.

In any event, a quad headlight GTV coupay – lowered, natch – occupies a permanent spot somewhere near the top of our short list, along with E30 M3s, 2002s, and P-cars of various stripes. We’ll have plenty of time sorting it out in our heads, that’s for sure.

Viva Italia!

The perfect 02 driver?

•January 8, 2010 • Comments Off on The perfect 02 driver?

Nothing about this purposefully-lowered 2002 says “show car,” and you know what? We love it. This is an “M2”- a 2002 with an S14 engine swap (the 2.3L, 16V inline-four from the E30 M3). It looks absolutely terrific, and by all appearances it drives every bit as good as it looks.

We might have an early candidate for our favorite cars of 2010.

We don't know what it is..

..but we like it.

If you know what it is (aside from the obvious– badass Merc), let us know.

Addendum: it’s a custom 1952 Mercedes-Benz 170S (hat tip to Ralf of chromjuwelen.com).

Internet f—— Explorer..

•January 7, 2010 • 2 Comments

We are Firefox users, so we never realized that this website looks absolutely horrendous in Internet Explorer (splotchy, artifacty images, like someone had taken a Watercolor filter to them– a known issue, apparently) until we happened to fire it up on IE by happenstance. We put a lot of thought and care into putting this site together, so if you are interested in viewing its contents optimally, please:

  1. Switch now to Firefox, which is free (and which you should probably be doing, anyway), or
  2. Failing that, either zoom in (Ctrl +) or zoom out (Ctrl -) of your IE page, which seems to resolve the immediate problem.

Thanks!

Addendum: we are told that Safari, Chrome, and IE8 work well also.

Didn't expect to say this but..

..the classic 911 looks surprisingly good with steel wheels. Fuchs are our first love, but we can see ourselves running these as winter wheels (that is, if we dared take out our [imaginary] classic 911 in winter conditions– rust, not our bodily safety, being the primary concern).
