The Smoking Tire bloviates, we listen

•July 7, 2010 • 1 Comment

Albeit with some amount of skepticism. “This is the future of Lotus going forward” — really? Much as we’d like for that to be the case, that’s not what we heard (although in fairness, the Smoking Tire review predates the Lotus report by about two months).

As much as we like the Esprit (it is such a looker, even after all these years), and as special a car as it may be, we’ll take the Elise of the two. That’s not terribly surprising – not dissimilar from how we prefer the 944 or 968’s nimbler driver’s car to the 928’s grand tourer – but what is is that we think the Elise arguably even sounds better (yes, with all four of its Toyota-sourced cylinders) than the turbocharged Esprit, which oddly doesn’t do much for us. We don’t doubt that it probably sounds a heck of a lot better in the metal, but still— when it comes to V8s, we prefer the naturally aspirated type from that other British marque.

And how nice are those canyon roads? California just kills us with those world class driving roads that we can’t have. They, and not the cars, are arguably the main attraction here.

That slammed look

Instantly makes most cars look better (provided they had a modicum of respectability in the first place), even saloons of prodigious girth like the E60 M5. Der Ring-Taxi never looked so good.

Two Cossies and a Motorsport BMW

Mining the latest Top Gear some more. Damned if that Mercedes doesn’t look good! Our undisputed emotional choice of the bunch, although the E36 M3 is probably the best car. The interior (and JC’s reaction thereupon) is a riot, however.

Captain Slow likes the Boxster Spyder, gets tail happy "like the other two idiots"

Oh, and 911 Sport Classic, blah blah blah.

The clip stops short during The Stig’s lap, but the Boxster Spyder does it in 1:24.9 (just above the BMW M3’s 1:25.3).

Daily driven-look 2002

•June 29, 2010 • 3 Comments

We’re really liking the look of this Malaga 2002, what appears to be a daily driver. A driver and not a show queen (conveniently overlooking the fact that it was spotted at the tony Greenwich Concours d’Elegance), but still nicely maintained. The blackened grille. The rally lights (temporary painter’s tape notwithstanding). The tastefully lowered ride height. The OEM steel wheels. Some might say the roof bars and luggage rack are trendy (even annoyingly so), but we confess, we like them and think they look great. We don’t even mind the big US-spec bumpers. All in all, looks like a winner to us, and further fuels our desire to get in one of these cars someday soon.
