Taking a quick break from cars with this— so good, even all these years later. Like a lot of people, this was our introduction to The Smiths. Imagine our shock (displeasure, initially), then, to discover that as far as gateway drugs went, “How Soon Is Now” was the farthest of outliers, sounding like nothing else that had flowed from the pen of guitarist Johnny Marr (who composed the vast majority of the music for his band). We would grow to love their entire discography, but nothing else had quite that same initial spark— “How Soon Is Now” sort of took your breath away with its tortured brilliance.
A rather extraordinary version from Versailles. Adapted for live instrumental performance (and not without difficulty), it’s revelatory in how organic and flat-out tuneful – almost joyous – it sounds, as Marr gets to stretch out his legs. This is the version that should have appeared on “Hatful of Hollow”:
Call me an analog soul in a digital world, but I find that many of our advancing technologies and current levels of interconnectivity leave us feeling more disenchanted and isolated than ever before. We send text messages in lieu of calling, we e-mail instead of putting pen to paper, and we hide behind our online personas. Modern society has quickly become a realm of intangibles— but even I’m not ready to go live alone in the desert quite yet.
..don’t get as much run on this site as they probably deserve. So here they are. Count ’em— not one, but two very good-looking ones. Cue “The Self Preservation Society.”
Car and owner recently died in an accident, according to the photographer (Steven Campbell of wagenwerks.net). We are sorry to hear it.
Ronal Turbos are some great-looking wheels (they pair especially beautifully with older VW Sciroccos and Golfs), but you mostly only see them on tuner/show cars. Well here they are, burnishing their motorsport bona fides.
We admit, though— we have no idea how heavy or strong these wheels are, although they’re apparently good enough to run on this track-prepped MkI (and not look out of place). Anyone know?
Like dying and waking up to find that you’ve gone to heaven. You can almost smell the place and hear all its wonderful sounds.

Because we know there are more than a few wagonistas among our readers.
The wheels are large-ish for the car (and not our first choice), but otherwise, this tough-looking W123 hits all the right notes with us— from the stance, to the Bosch headlights (which we like a heck of a lot more than the US-spec units), to the deep AMG chin spoiler.
It looks terrific. They may not be the fastest wagons (especially in the US, which mostly got the oil-burning variant), but few will ever outclass them. It’s not always about horsepower numbers or 0-60 times, and the W123 proves it.
Intro and outro are a bit overdrawn, but overall, a nicely-edited and enjoyable compilation.
