Dorifto! Drift-tastic ’90s German saloons on Best Motoring

We don’t speak nihongo, but this is what we suspect Tsuchiya-san was saying about the 5er:

This is a sedan? Holy s***!

We think the E39 has aged exceptionally well and would make an appealing used alternative to the E90 M3 sedan. Beware the true cost of an older BM, however.

The W202 is not unappealing in its own right, but on the Merc side, we prefer to dip just a little further back in time.

A rarely seen view of the Batmobile (unless you’re a racer and you happen to have one roaring past you on the track). Check out those insanely wide rear tires!

Roy DeCarava: 1919-2009

Not sure where we were, but we found out about photographer Roy DeCarava’s October 27 passing only very recently. An unsung master of the medium, DeCarava photographed with a minor key, quiet brilliance.

Random snaps: B7 Audi RS4

There is a reasonable chance that this car ends up in our garage within the next few years (although, for matters of necessary practicality, the B7 Audi S4 Avant probably stands an even greater chance).

Needless to say, we can’t wait. And we curse Audi for not having brought the RS4 Avant stateside. Us ‘muricans always end up getting the short shrift.

Be sure to check out David E. Davis’s soliloquy on the RS4 also.

Hmm.. we like it!

No, the Boxster isn’t our first choice of P-Car (although we’d gladly take one). And modern “special edition” Porsches tend to engender more eyerolls (see Sport Classic, Porsche 911) than admiration. But we think we like the new Porsche Boxster Spyder. Maybe even a lot. And small touches like the low-slung ragtop and twin bulges on the rear deck lid make for a nice visual homage to the legendary Speedsters and Spyders of yore.

Is it worth 61,000 simoleons? Probably not- there are better buys for the money, new and used. But new Porsches are always going to have a high cost of admission- it is Porsche’s raison d’être. What’s more important is that we like the direction in which Porsche is headed (weight reduction + increased power = win).

Random snaps: E36 M3

If you thought we were on a Bayerische Motoren Werke kick today, you’d be correct. Here is, in our view, the perfect E36 M3: four doors, aggressively lowered, Style 23 M Contour OEM wheels- this is the way to do it. No tint. No wing. No aftermarket body kit. We could see ourselves paying somewhere between $10-15K for a clean, low miles, unmolested example.
