This might be one of the hotter 996s we can recall ever seeing

Then again, we typically don’t keep an eye out for these, so it’s conceivable that we might have previously overlooked some nice examples. 996s are generally unloved, and sadly, we’re no exception.

If we were looking strictly for performance value on the dollar, the 996 range would no doubt be the place to look. However, being the sort to approach cars not just rationally but also very much emotionally (which we think puts us in the same boat as most enthusiasts), we’ll probably end up overpaying for a 964 or 993, cars whose values have been inflated by collectors as well as low production numbers.

But we suspect the personal satisfaction will be worth it.

Built to go like stink, by someone who knows a thing or two about tuning early GTIs for the race track. Don’t believe us? Ask the owner of this Caterham Superlight R:

This fine specimen is the edo competition 993 911 GT2- as if a stock 993’s rump wasn’t hot enough.

The ever popular BMW CSI just got some competition

•April 1, 2010 • Comments Off on The ever popular BMW CSI just got some competition

This BMW CSI is one of the most popular cars on this site (as well as on the Internets, if we had to guess), based on search statistics and number of page views. And for good reason. While we don’t think its crown is going away anytime soon, we do think it may have met its first credible challenger.

Depending on who you ask, it could probably use “more low” (we confess: it probably could), but there’s no question that even as it stands, this E9 on charcoal BBS RSs (OEM Style 5s) very much looks the business.

AMG CLK 63 Black Series

One of our favorite recent Mercs. We wonder how much these guys will ever depreciate- we’d love to try one someday. What’ll prices look like in ten years? In fifteen? We’re not holding our breath, we’ll admit.

Badass, just badass.

We don't really need an excuse to post an E39 M5 on BBS LMs, do we?

Clean and simple- an exercise in restrained modification. We could do without the tint (though at least it, too, is restrained, and not limousine tint), but we’re sympathetic- it’s a Tejas car, after all.

Trying to count all the ways in which this is perfect

Click for hi-res— this deserves to be ogled large in all its glorious detail, from the period graphics on either side of the number plate, right down to the tread of the meaty Toyo R888s (we have a thing for good tires). Do. Want.

Your moment of zen

Pretty mesmerizing. We could see these being played on an endless loop – no audio required – on a wall-mounted LCD at home or at the office.

Catch the rest of them here.

We're amused by these pics

Looks deceive. To paraphrase the great photographer W. Eugene Smith, photography is a damn liar. Obviously, we’re not seeing weight transfer and front wheel lift taking place in this Lancia Delta and Mark II Ford Escort- just two rally cars unsettled after coming down from some air.

Still, we’re tickled by this not-very-illusory visual illusion of a couple of Group B-esque cars lifting a front axle, as if going at it in a muscle car drag race.

Race-prepped 8-series

Don’t see too many 8ers used for racing. This one’s been transformed to near-unrecognizable by its livery, wing and front spoiler, and multipiece BBS centerlock wheels.
