We want one. And we can only hope that these don’t follow, say, the E30 M3’s price trajectory by the time we’re ready to purchase— how maddening that would be.

It is the anti-modern car – which packs on the weight and the power – and that appeals to us tremendously. Quoth the Editor-in-Chief of Road & Track magazine (and an erstwhile Mk1 Golf GTI owner), “I can’t tell you how often I feel like I’m driving my ass off only to look down and see I’m going 40 mph. It’s charming” (source).

I have always really liked the Mk I, but I can see that unadulterated ones are going to be expensive, and pretty soon.

- Unfortunately, that’s already happening. MkI GTI’s like this one “in good nick” are already appreciating quite a bit. If you haven’t already gotten your fix, find and buy one now.
