The middle child of the family

Contemplating the history of BMW’s compact executive class (first the Neue Klasse, later the 3-series), one can’t help but feel that the E21 gets lost in the shuffle, sort of like the middle child in a family. The 2002 was and is revered, and rightly so- it is a legend, a giant. The mass-produced, mass-marketed E30, meanwhile, literally had something for everyone, from the runty 318i to the exclusive, star athlete M3.

It is easy to overlook the E21 amidst all this, but we think they continue to remain fine lookers, and an attractive alternative for those to whom the 2002 is beyond reach, and the E30 perhaps a little too common.

  1. It’s a shame that the US E21 – 320i has such ugly bumpers.. I’d have killed for my old 320 to have such looks (not to mention the under-hood goodness) of a 323!
